US to withdraw one of Honduras’ many credit cards

2009 July 9

The US has suspended $16.5 million dollars in military assistance – to say nothing of the remaining $180 million of aid. The rationale being that the military aid may have provided funds to the golpistas. The problem, of course, is that the overall aid given to Honduras facilitates “democratization” programs that prompted the coup two weeks ago.

There is no doubt that world aid and stimulus give Honduras, and countries like it, tangible benefits that promote positive goods, but the question becomes how the US, and other Western nations, proceed without throwing the baby out with the bathwater – or eliminate the aid to the coup without subjecting the people of Honduras to another indignity.
